RHOC’s Lydia McLaughlin Shattered as Brother Killed by Police—Family Vows Lawsuit After Shocking Bodycam Video.
Former Real Housewives of Orange County star Lydia McLaughlin Stirling is reeling from the sudden, violent death of her brother, Geoffrey Shyam Stirling. The 45-year-old was shot and killed by Newport Beach police during a traffic stop last month. Now, days after haunting bodycam footage was made public, Lydia and her family say they’re preparing to file a lawsuit—and demanding answers.
In a deeply emotional Instagram post shared on May 5, Lydia, 44, revealed that Geoffrey had been laid to rest. Alongside a carousel of family photos and funeral clips—including a moment where white doves were released into the sky—she reflected on the pain of back-to-back losses.

“Just six months ago, we stood in this same place grieving the loss of my mom,” she wrote, referring to Judy Stirling, who passed away in October after battling breast cancer. “My heart is broken, and the shock still hasn’t settled. But even in the sorrow, I cling to what I know is true: God is good. He is in control. I am not.”

She ended the post with a message of hope, writing, “My brother is now with my mom, and I hold onto the promise that one day, we’ll all be reunited. Until then, I will miss them every single day.”
The Traffic Stop That Ended in Gunfire
According to the Newport Beach Police Department, Geoffrey Stirling was pulled over around 9:15 p.m. on April 17 for allegedly running a red light along West Coast Highway. Police say the situation escalated when Geoffrey refused to follow commands and became physically aggressive with the officer.
They claim he managed to wrestle away the officer’s taser and attempted to deploy it multiple times. That’s when the officer opened fire.
Geoffrey was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Bodycam Footage Raises Questions
The police released bodycam footage on May 7, and it immediately sparked public outcry. In the video, Geoffrey appears confused and distressed. When asked to sit on the curb, he refuses, saying, “You guys are harassing me.” A few moments later, he adds, “Don’t shoot me,” to which the officer replies, “I’m not going to shoot you—don’t reach for your ID.”
Then, chaos unfolds. The officer accuses Geoffrey of urinating on himself, and as the encounter turns physical, the video shows Geoffrey reaching toward the officer’s belt. A struggle ensues. The officer yells “Drop it!” before several gunshots ring out.
Police say Geoffrey had taken hold of the taser and pointed it at the officer’s head.
An Independent Investigation—and a Legal Battle Ahead
The California Department of Justice has opened an independent investigation into the shooting, which is standard in cases of officer-involved fatalities. But the Stirling family says the footage tells a different story—and they’re not staying silent.
Speaking to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the family said Geoffrey appeared to be backing away when he was shot multiple times. They plan to file a lawsuit in federal court, seeking full transparency and accountability.
In a public statement, Lydia said:
“My family and I are devastated by the loss of my brother. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and the community. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn.”
Her father, Scott Stirling, also spoke out, calling Geoffrey a “loving son, brother, uncle, and friend.” He described him as a creative spirit—a television producer, screenwriter, actor, and model—who went to church every Sunday and supported several charities.

Life After Reality TV
Though Lydia's time on Real Housewives was brief—she appeared in seasons 8 and 12—she’s continued building a life centered around family and faith. She and husband Doug Stirling, with whom she shares three sons, recently launched a Christian lifestyle brand, Noble Pearls. Lydia has been actively promoting the project on social media this year.
But 2025 has brought unimaginable grief. With the death of her mother in October and now the tragic loss of her brother, Lydia has been forced to confront more heartbreak than most people see in a lifetime.
Yet in her public posts, she remains rooted in hope and her faith. “Even in sorrow,” she wrote, “God is still good.”
